Metal Braces: Although considered less aesthetic, metal braces are the most commonly used and well-known fixed treatment method among orthodontists. This method is highly versatile and allows for the application of all orthodontic treatment procedures.
Aesthetic Braces (Clear Braces): Clear braces are a more aesthetically pleasing option compared to metal braces, as they are less visible. However, they are not as discreet as clear aligners. Similar to metal braces, all orthodontic treatment procedures can be performed with this method. Due to their glass-like material, clear braces are more prone to breakage. Additionally, non-metal slotted types have higher friction, which can extend the treatment duration.
Clear Aligners (Invisalign): Clear aligners represent the most advanced orthodontic treatment method today, capable of performing all treatments done with fixed braces. The primary mechanism relies on the pushing force of the plastic material. Since this pushing force is shorter-lasting compared to braces, new aligners must be worn weekly. Because aligners are custom-made based on the patient’s dental structure and require frequent replacement, the cost is generally higher than fixed braces. Additionally, since they are removable, patients must wear them consistently. Failure to do so may extend the treatment duration or lead to unsuccessful results. The biggest advantage of clear aligners is their near-invisibility, making them a highly aesthetic option.
Lingual Treatment (Braces on the Inside): In this method, unlike traditional metal braces where brackets and wires are placed on the front surfaces of the teeth, the braces are attached to the back surfaces of the teeth, making them completely invisible. The main disadvantages of this method are its significantly higher cost compared to conventional treatments due to its custom-made nature, the potential for tongue irritation, and the possibility of temporary speech difficulties.
